Atherton’s Australia Day Celebrations

It seems that a lot of Tablelands residents enjoyed their day off yesterday to take part in Australia Day celebrations.

There were backyard barbeques taking place all around town, along with tug of war competitions and games of cricket.

Yesterday, the Regional Australia Day awards also took place and it was great to see people from our local community getting the recognition that they deserved.

Some of our local winners included the team from the Mareeba and Atherton Rotary clubs, who took out Community Event of the Year for the FNQ Rotary Field Days 2011, as well as Alex Srhoj who took out the Sports Administrator Award and Colleen Sheppard who received the Senior Cultural Award.

Of course there were many more award winners too, and they will all be listed in next week’s Tablelands Advertiser.

Congratulations to all of those who did receive Australia Day Awards, and I hope that everyone on the Tablelands enjoyed their Australia Day.
