Ergon Energy and Greening Australia Queensland have recently started up the “Plant Smart Program” where they are trying to encourage property owners to think seriously about the type of plants that they choose for their properties, as the wrong kind can prove to be hazardous, especially during and after extreme weather conditions such as storms and high winds.
One of the major problems that can be found in the aftermath of storms for example, is the damage left behind from unsuitable trees being planted too close to powerlines.
So to help reduce these types of hazards, homeowners are being urged to educate themselves about appropriate plants and to only plant suitable trees near powerlines.
The most suitable kinds are ones that won’t grow too big or high, and Atherton residents are encouraged to contact the Atherton Regional Council before planting any trees or plants near powerlines or near council footways.
You can find out further information about planting appropriate trees at your property by visiting the Ergon Energy website or by contacting the Atherton Regional Council directly.
